Theremins

Theremin workshop with Barbara BuchholzThe theremin is a unique electronic musical instrument that was invented in 1921 by Russian Professor Leon Theremin. It is the only instrument in the world that is played without touching.

A theremin produces hauntingly ethereal and eerie sounds similar to a waterphone. Unlike the waterphone, a theremin can be played tonally, and can also be made to sound like a stringed instrument, similar to a violin. Like the waterphone, the theremin has been featured in many sci-fi and horror movie soundtracks.
